The station is the last piece of dry infrastructure

Venezia Santa Lucia is the last piece of dry infrastructure on the trip: it sits on the Grand Canal. There is no taxi rank in the sense you are used to, no drop-off, no car park at the exit, and the first decision you make in Venice is which boat to get on with your luggage.

Venezia Mestre is the mainland station one stop earlier, and it is a different city. If your hotel address contains a street number and a normal street name, you may well want Mestre. If it contains a sestiere, you want Santa Lucia.

9.50 euro buys 75 minutes on the water

A standard ACTV ticket costs 9.50 euro for 75 minutes on the combined network, waterbus plus bus plus tram plus People Mover. The bus-only 75-minute ticket is 1.50 euro, a 10-ride bus carnet is 14.00 euro, and a bus ticket bought on board is 3.00 euro.

The exclusions are the expensive part. The waterbus ticket is not valid on lines 16 and 19, on the Casino line or on Alilaguna, and it does not cover journeys to or from Marco Polo airport. On board a vaporetto you pay by card only, never in cash, and the ticket comes already validated.

The pass math, and the airport trap

24 hours costs 25 euro, 48 hours 35 euro, 72 hours 45 euro, 168³ hours 65 euro. Validity starts at first validation, not at midnight. The 24-hour pass covers regional Trenitalia trains inside the comune, and travelers aged 6 to 29 pay 27 euro for the 72-hour version after buying a 6 euro Rolling Venice card.

Under 3 single rides and the pass has paid for itself, which is why the day you arrive with bags is the day to buy it. Marco Polo stays outside all of it: the Aerobus is 10 euro one way and 18 euro return on lines 5, 15 and 45, or 18 euro combined with 90 minutes on the network. Adding the airport to an existing pass costs 7 euro one way or 13 euro return, but only if you buy the two together.
