Gubbio stops on May 15, a working day

The Ceri of Gubbio run at 6 pm on May 15 every year, a fixed date that is not a public holiday anywhere in Italy, over about 4.3 km from the town to the Basilica of Sant'Ubaldo on Monte Ingino.

6 pm, 4.3 km, and a mountain at the end

The run starts at 6 pm (18:00 on Italian signs), after the bishop's blessing, and covers about 4 km and 300¹ meters.

It ends at the Basilica of Sant'Ubaldo on the summit of Monte Ingino, which means the second half is a climb. The Ceri are carried, not wheeled, so what you are watching is a load going up a hill at speed.

There are 2 pauses of around 15 minutes, at the bottom of via Cairoli and at the entrance to Piazza Grande. Those are the moments when a spectator standing in one place actually sees something for more than a few seconds.

Nobody overtakes, and the result is known in advance

Overtaking does not exist in the Ceri, and the 3 always arrive in the order they started: Sant'Ubaldo, then San Giorgio, then Sant'Antonio.

Sant'Ubaldo belongs to the masons, San Giorgio to the merchants, Sant'Antonio to the farmers. The three trades run the three Ceri, and the sequence has not been in question for centuries.

So it is not a race. Winning consists of carrying your Cero as vertical as possible, without falls and without the leaning that the town calls a penduta. The competition is against gravity and against your own crew, and the judges are the people who have watched it every year of their lives.

May 15 is not on the list of 11

The national civil holidays are fixed by law 260² of May 27, 1949 and there are 11 of them, plus Sundays: January 1 and 6, April 25, Easter Monday, May 1, June 2, August 15, November 1, December 8, December 25 and 26.

May 15 is not among them. In Milan or Palermo it is an ordinary Friday or Tuesday, with schools, offices and banks open as usual.

Gubbio shuts anyway. That gap between the legal calendar and the local one is worth understanding before you plan a trip around it: there is no national timetable change, no holiday train service, and no automatic day off for anyone travelling with you.

What a fixed date does to your planning

May 15 does not move, which puts the Ceri among a small set of Italian festivals you can book flights against a year ahead.

Most large Italian religious events hang off Easter and shift by weeks. This one does not: the same date, the same 6 pm start, the same 4.3 km. If it falls on a Wednesday, it happens on the Wednesday.

The practical consequence is accommodation. A town of Gubbio's size absorbing a national audience on a date known 12 months in advance means rooms go early, and the surrounding towns fill as the overflow.

Where the Ceri live for the other 364 days

The Ceri themselves stay in the Basilica of Sant'Ubaldo on Monte Ingino throughout the year, which is where they end their run on May 15.

The statuettes of the 3 saints are kept apart from them, in the church of San Francesco della Pace down in the town. They are mounted for the day and returned afterwards.

That means the objects exist outside the festival, in 2 separate places, and the mountain basilica is reachable on an ordinary afternoon.

How to watch a run with no overtaking

Since the order is fixed and the route climbs 4.3 km, the only decision a spectator has to make is where to stand and when to give up on following.

The 2 pauses of around 15 minutes are the fixed points. Everything between them is fast and hidden behind other people, so a place chosen near a stop is worth more than a place chosen for the view.

The other choice is the top. The Ceri finish at the basilica on Monte Ingino, and getting there before them means leaving the streets well before 6 pm and climbing on your own legs while the town is still filling.

Neither choice gives you the whole thing. That is the nature of a 4.3 km event carried through a medieval street plan, and it is why people come back on the same date the following year.
