The Centro Antico of Naples is a limited traffic zone watched by 4 camera gates that keep two different timetables: via del Sole is active until 10:00 pm from Monday to Thursday and until 2:00 am from Friday to Sunday, while via Miroballo, via Duomo and via Santa Sofia run 9:00 am to 5:00 pm every day.
Four gates, two timetables
The 4 gates of the Centro Antico do not switch on and off together, and the one that stays on latest is via del Sole.
| Gate | Days | Active (2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Via del Sole | Monday to Thursday | 9:00 am - 10:00 pm |
| Via del Sole | Friday to Sunday and holidays | 9:00 am - 2:00 am |
| Via Miroballo | Every day | 9:00 am - 5:00 pm |
| Via Duomo | Every day | 9:00 am - 5:00 pm |
| Via Santa Sofia | Every day | 9:00 am - 5:00 pm |
Read the table by the gate you will actually cross. A car that can legally pass via Duomo at 6:00 pm on a Saturday would be fined at via del Sole at the same minute.
Who is on the list, and who is not
Six categories may enter: residents, businesses located inside the zone, goods deliveries, doctors on home visits, authorized public service vehicles, and patients going to health facilities inside the zone.
Visitors are not a category. Anyone else needs a temporary permit, which the council handles by email at permessitemporanei.ztl@comune.napoli.it, and which has to be in place before the car crosses a gate, not after.
Naples has more than this one zone
The Centro Antico is not the only restricted zone in Naples: the council also runs ZTLs at Mezzocannone, via Ferdinando Russo and Chiaia with Tarsia, Pignasecca and Dante. Their hours are not in the data behind this page, so none is given.
A clear run through the Centro Antico says nothing about those other zones. Check each one on the council's pages before driving across the city.
Nothing happens at the gate
In Italian art cities in 2026 the system is the same: access only for authorized vehicles in defined time bands, cameras at the boundary reading every plate automatically, and a penalty issued by the council to any car that passes without a registered permit.
You will not be stopped. The penalty is recorded at the moment of passing and reaches the car's registered keeper afterwards.
Arriving without a car
The fastest direct train from Roma Termini reaches Napoli Centrale in 1 hour 13 minutes, and 45 direct Frecciarossa services ran on the weekday sampled on September 8, 2026. From the station the Centro Antico is on foot or by public transport, with no permit to arrange.
Naples Capodichino airport handled 13,271,5224 passengers in 2025, up 4.9% on 2024, the fourth busiest in Italy. The fare and frequency of the airport bus into the city are not in the data this page relies on, so check the operator before landing.
