Naples: ZTL gates, the tax and the Vesuviana

Naples raised its tourist tax on May 1, 2026 to €4.00 to €6.00 a person a night, keeps four camera gates on the Centro Antico ZTL, and runs only one Vesuviana line, the L1 to Sorrento, past both Herculaneum and Pompeii.

The tax went up on May 1, 2026

Since May 1, 2026, under Giunta resolution 89 of March 12, 2026, Naples charges €4.00 a person a night in 1-star hotels, €4.50 in 2-star, €5.50 in 3-star and in other non-hotel lodgings, and €6.00 in 4 and 5-star hotels and in short-term rentals. It applies to non-residents over 14, for at most 14 consecutive nights.

The rates in force from January 1, 2026 were one euro lower in every category, so a booking made early in the year may quote the old figure. The national picture is at the tourist tax in Italy. Every price below is in euros.

Centro Antico: four gates, two timetables

The Centro Antico ZTL has four electronic gates. Via del Sole is active Monday to Thursday from 9:00 am to 10:00 pm and Friday to Sunday and on holidays from 9:00 am to 2:00 am, while via Miroballo, via Duomo and via Santa Sofia are active every day from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm (2026).

Residents, businesses inside the zone, deliveries and a few others are exempt, and temporary permits are requested from the Comune by email. Naples has other ZTLs besides this one, covered at ZTL in Naples.

One line for both excavations

The EAV line L1 Napoli-Sorrento, from Porta Nolana and Garibaldi, is the only Vesuvian line that stops at both Ercolano Scavi and Pompei Scavi-Villa dei Misteri, on the timetable in force since March 28, 2026. It runs 33 weekday trains each way, the first from Porta Nolana at 5:36 am and the last at 10:11 pm, with 36-minute gaps in the middle of the day.

All 33 stop at Pompei Scavi, but only 10 stop at Ercolano Scavi, three of them Campania Express. From Porta Nolana the Herculaneum departures are 5:36, 6:48, 7:24, 8:22, 9:13 and 11:22 am, then 2:22, 5:22, 5:38 and 10:11 pm.

Porta Nolana to Pompei Scavi takes 32 to 37 minutes, and to Ercolano Scavi 17 to 18. A single fare in the Na5 band is €4.60, or €5.80 for the 180-minute integrated ticket (2026). Which excavation to choose is at Pompeii vs Herculaneum.
