Italy's busiest airports, by 2025 passengers

Rome Fiumicino is Italy's busiest airport with 51,306,744² passengers in 2025, ahead of Milan Malpensa at 31,385,585³, Bergamo Orio al Serio at 16,937,976⁴ and Naples Capodichino at 13,271,522⁵, on operator figures collected by Assaeroporti.

The criterion: passengers counted at the gate, calendar year 2025

The order on this page is one number and nothing else: total passengers handled in 2025, as reported by the airport operators themselves and published by Assaeroporti. No opinion about terminals, lounges or connections enters the ranking.

That total includes general aviation and direct transit passengers, so it is a measure of how busy a runway is, not of how many people started or ended a trip there.

Two official totals, 340,000 apart

Italy's airports handled 230,080,945¹ passengers in 2025 according to Assaeroporti, up 5.0% on 2024, and 229,740,554¹ according to ENAC. Both are official and both are for the same twelve months.

The gap is about 340,000¹ passengers, 0.15%¹ of the total, and it comes from a different counting perimeter rather than from an error. Any page that quotes one figure as the national total is quietly picking a side, so here are both.

The top four

Four airports carried more than ten million passengers each in 2025.

Fiumicino is operated by Aeroporti di Roma, Malpensa by SEA, Bergamo by SACBO and Naples by GESAC. The Fiumicino figure is flagged in the source as coming from Aeroporti2030, and the press has published a number close to 50.9² million citing ENAC instead: same airport, different perimeter again.

Bergamo is the only big one that shrank

Bergamo lost 2.4% of its traffic in 2025, the single fall among the four largest Italian airports, while Malpensa grew 8.6% in the same year. Two Lombardy airports moved in opposite directions in the same twelve months.

We have no verified explanation for the split, so we are not offering one. What it changes for a traveler is small but real: if a fare looks identical from both, the airport that is filling up is Malpensa, and its transfer times are the ones worth pricing first.

The three-letter codes that put people on the wrong plane

Two Italian cities have two commercial airports each in the ENAC register: Rome, with FCO at Fiumicino and CIA at Ciampino, and Venice, with VCE at Tessera and TSF at Treviso. Milan has LIN at Linate and MXP at Malpensa.

Bergamo is filed under its own name, BGY, not under Milan, and the same goes for Pisa (PSA) against Florence (FLR), Trapani (TPS) against Palermo (PMO), and Olbia (OLB) and Alghero (AHO) against Cagliari (CAG). Book by code, not by city name, and check the transfer before the fare.

Leaving the busiest one: 32 minutes to Termini

The Leonardo Express covers Fiumicino to Roma Termini in 32 minutes with no intermediate stops, every 15 minutes, for 14.00 euro one way in 2026. Departures run 4:50 am to 11:05 pm from Termini (04:50 to 23:05 on Italian boards) and 5:38 am to 11:27 pm from the airport.

Under-fours ride free, and each paying adult brings one child aged 4 to 12 free of charge. A carnet of ten rides costs 115.00⁷ euro, which pays off only for repeat trips.
