December in Italy: the dates that matter

December in Italy is a month of deadlines rather than openings: the Alba truffle fair closes on December 6, the Cinque Terre day card sits at its floor of 17.30² euro until December 31, and the Bolzano Christmas market runs on to January 6, 2027.

December 6: the last day of the Alba truffle fair

The 96th International White Truffle Fair of Alba closes on December 6, 2026, having opened on October 10. It runs at Alba, in Piedmont, under the title Autentiche Relazioni.

Almost two months long, it is one of the few Italian food events that survives into December, and the first weekend of the month is the last one it covers. Precise hours for the truffle market inside the fair are not published on a page we could open, so check before making the trip for a specific morning.

To December 31: Cinque Terre at its floor price

The Cinque Terre Treno Card costs 17.30² euro a day for an adult from November 2 to December 31, 2026. In the main season, March 14 to November 1, the same card runs on dynamic pricing from 22 to 35 euro a day depending on how busy the date is.

Two and three day cards follow: 29 euro and 34 euro in the low window, against 36.50² to 61 euro and 49 to 81 euro in the high one. December is therefore the cheapest month of the year to use the Cinque Terre trains, and the price is fixed rather than dynamic, so there is no bad date to pick.

In December: spring tickets for the Last Supper

The Cenacolo Vinciano in Milan releases tickets quarterly, and the December release covers February, March and April. The other windows are September for November to January, March for May to July, and June for August to October.

If you are planning a spring trip, December is the month to set an alarm. Failing that, around 215³ extra tickets a day go on sale online only, every Wednesday at noon, for the following week: that weekly window is the realistic route for anyone booking late.

To January 6: the Bolzano market outlasts Christmas

The Bolzano Christmas market runs from November 27, 2026 to January 6, 2027, in Piazza Walther, along via Isarco and in the Christmas Park, with the opening ceremony on November 26 at 5:00 pm and daily hours of 10:00 am to 7:00 pm.

The closing date is the underused part. The market stays open through the first week of January, past Christmas, past New Year, up to Epiphany, when a large share of the December visitors have already gone home.

Winter hours close the day early

The park of Miramare castle at Trieste opens at 8:00 am every day of the year and closes at 4:00 pm in November, December and January. From April to September it closes at 7:00 pm.

That three hour difference is the shape of a December day at any outdoor site in the north: full access in the morning, nothing after mid-afternoon. Build the day around the closing time rather than the opening one.

The month families come home

In 2025, 442,000⁶ travelers from the United States came to Italy to visit relatives and friends, 7.2% of the American total, and they stayed 11.9⁶ nights against 8.7 nights for other American travelers. December and January are their months.

That is a different December from the one in the brochures. The destinations are the villages of Calabria and Abruzzo rather than the markets of Alto Adige, and the practical questions are about reaching a small comune in winter. The roots travel hub covers those.
