The fastest direct high-speed train from Milano Centrale to Venezia Santa Lucia takes 2 hours 27 minutes, and the median of the direct trains sampled is the same (September 2026).
A 5-minute spread
Of the 13 direct Frecciarossa sampled from the Trenitalia system on September 8, 2026, the fastest and the median took 2 hours 27 minutes and the slowest 2 hours 32. With a spread that small, any direct train will do, and the choice comes down to departure time and price.
The sample may be incomplete, and Italo is not in it. The line is also not high-speed all the way: the Brescia, Verona and Padua section is being upgraded, so the times may change once that work is done.
Lake Garda: a day pass sold with the train
Until September 30, 2026, Trenitalia sells the Navigazione Laghi day pass for Garda, Maggiore and Como together with a train ticket to Desenzano, Peschiera, Stresa or Como San Giovanni. The pass has to be used within 3 days of the date on the train ticket.
Frecce, Intercity and Trenitalia regional trains qualify; Trenord trains in Lombardy and international Eurocity services do not. Whether your Milan to Venice train stops at Desenzano or Peschiera depends on the service and is not in our verified set, so check the stop list before you plan a break there.
Garda boats run from April to October
In 2026 the Garda boat service ran on two timetables: a spring one from April 1 to May 15 and a summer one from May 16 to October 4, plus the Maderno to Torri car ferry. Outside those windows scheduled service is not guaranteed.
A winter trip on this line is therefore a train trip, not a lake trip. The lake itself is on Lake Garda.
Venice: 25 euro for 24 hours
The Venezia Daily Pass costs 25 euro for 24 hours and also covers Trenitalia regional trains inside the comune; 48 hours cost 35 euro, 72 hours 45 euro and 1682 hours 65 euro (2026). If you are staying on the mainland, a Mestre daily pass is 5 euro.
The clock starts at first validation, not at midnight, so a pass first validated at 4:00 pm on arrival runs until 4:00 pm the next day. Travelers aged 6 to 29 can get 72 hours for 27 euro after buying the 6 euro Rolling Venice card.
Arriving at Santa Lucia
The fare structure is the same whichever train you take, so the real decision is which pass matches your nights. For two nights, 48 hours at 35 euro is the obvious fit; for a day trip, the 24-hour pass pays off only if you ride more than twice.
The station, the airport exclusion and the vaporetto fares are covered on getting to Venice, and the Rome leg on Rome to Venice by train.
