Milan: Area C, the tax and the Last Supper

Three rules shape a Milan visit in 2026: driving into Area C costs €7.50 a day on weekdays, the tourist tax runs from €3.00 to €12.00 a person a night since April 1, 2026, and Last Supper tickets are released by quarter, months before the visit.

Area C: €7.50, weekdays 7:30 am to 7:30 pm

Area C is the paid limited traffic zone inside the Cerchia dei Bastioni, and entering costs €7.50 a day for most vehicles, Monday to Friday from 7:30 am to 7:30 pm (07:30 to 19:30 on the signs), holidays excluded. Cameras read the plate at every gate.

The late rate is €22.50, payable up to midnight on the seventh day after you drove in. The zone map is at ZTL in Milan.

Area B is a different zone

Area B is a low emission zone, much larger than Area C, and it has no ticket: it bans the more polluting vehicles, and the Comune says it acts on 65% of the city's yearly traffic emissions.

Its hours and exact boundary were not on a page we could open, because the city's Area B page returned an error. Ask your rental company which environmental class the car is before you drive in.

The tax: €9.50 in B&Bs and short lets

Since April 1, 2026 Milan's imposta di soggiorno runs from €3.00 a person a night in 1-star hotels, hostels and campsites to €12.00 in 5-star hotels, with €4.00 for 2 star, €7.00 for 3 and €10.00 for 4.

B&Bs, holiday apartments, guest rooms and short-term rentals all pay €9.50, which is more than a 3-star hotel. How that compares with Venice is at Venice vs Milan tourist tax. All prices here are in euros.

The Last Supper: book by the quarter

Last Supper tickets are released four times a year: in September for November to January, in December for February to April, in March for May to July and in June for August to October (2026). On top of that, every Wednesday at noon about 215 extra tickets a day go on sale online for the following week.

A ticket costs €15, or €2 for EU citizens aged 18 to 25, and even free entries need a booking. The visit lasts 15 minutes for up to 40 people, and if you are not there 30 minutes early you lose the slot. Why it works this way: the Last Supper releases tickets quarterly.

Brera: one ticket, seven days

The Pinacoteca di Brera ticket, La Grande Brera, costs €20 (€4 for EU citizens aged 18 to 25), is valid for seven days and also covers Palazzo Citterio; booking is compulsory (2026). The gallery opens Tuesday to Sunday from 8:30 am to 7:15 pm, last entry 6:00 pm.

It closes on Mondays and on January 1, May 1 and December 25. The first Sunday of each month is free, and still needs a booking. More at Pinacoteca di Brera.

Arriving: 2 hours 55 from Rome, a shuttle with no fares

The fastest direct train from Roma Termini to Milano Centrale takes 2 hours 55 minutes, with 46 direct Frecciarossa trains on a weekday, on the September 2026 timetable. The route is at Rome to Milan by train.

From Bergamo airport, the nonstop Orio Shuttle to Milano Centrale publishes neither times nor fares on its page: you see them only after searching a date (checked September 2, 2026). The three airports are compared at Milan airports.

Weather: 77.2°F in July, 37.8°F in January

Milan averages 77.2°F (25.1°C) in July, its warmest month, and 37.8°F (3.2°C) in January, on the 1991-2020 normals from Linate. July's mean daily high is 87.3°F (30.7°C).

The city itself, and the April fair that fills its hotels, are at Milano and the Salone del Mobile.
